Book 4: Historic Trinity's Wood Carvings 59 pages
The wood carvings of Historic Trinity Lutheran Church were furnished by the Irving Casson
Company of East Cambridge, Massachusetts. The carving artist was Mr. I. Kirkmayer, a craftsman
from Oberammergau, Germany. He hand-carved the various designs out of oak wood at the East
Cambridge Shops.
The most elaborate wood carvings are located in the upper portion of the altar reredos.
There we find a row of biblical figures, topped by lattice carved canopies in the grape vine motive.
Numerous Christian symbols are shown on both sides, and throughout the reredos, and are
continued at a lower level on the altar screens, to the right and left side of the reredos. The lectern
top has lattice type angle carvings on both sides. The lectern post is very ornately beset with four
statuettes that have discerning facial expressions (see St. Peter in the picture above). The main
organ screen contains exquisitely carved figures depicting the biblical stories. The whole screen is
intertwined with filigree work representing grape vines and leaves. Mirror image carvings appear on
both sides of the Narthex screen; Norman Slab glass window panels are installed between the two
sided carvings, giving a fine glitter to this outstanding work of art.
