Dr. Eberhard pronounces the Benediction at Historic Trinity.

Dr. Eberhard Speaks Out - "Sorry"

The Rev. Dr. David Eberhard will periodically do an article called "Dr. Eberhard Speaks Out." He will challenge us with his thoughts and experience as a leading churchman in America. While we may agree, or not agree, he will share with us what he has learned that works in the local parish. Over his forty years of experience in the ministry, he has always tended to be ahead of the current curve of church practices and is always "pushing the envelope" to get us to expand our thinking.

This summer a lot of people traveled all over the United States. Many folks got away for a brief moment from the hub bub and stresses of everyday work, the shuttling of kids from here to there, the all-too-few hours left in a day for quiet time for husband and wife. We pack up and go, hoping to have left that all behind.

Where can I go to find life's slower pace, an accepting atmosphere, and memorable experience - beyond the quick photo opts. The fancy hotel - sorry can't get in your room till after 4:00 p.m. The luscious beach - sorry closed by contamination. The restaurant to fill your hunger - sorry the wait in line is 45 minutes. The special gift to take home - sorry we are out of that right now. The nostalgic ride along the side roads through small towns - sorry the gas price makes it too expensive. The joyous reunion visiting with relatives - sorry the atmosphere isn't very accepting.

"I know, it's Sunday, surely if I find a church to attend my experience will be different". Too many folks, not all, have reported back that their summer church visitation was disastrous. One went to a church to attend the worship service at the time listed on the outside sign, sorry - only to find the service was already over. Another, was immediately approached to see if they had the right "credentials", sorry - "your not one of us ?" Another, was refused Holy Communion, sorry - because they had not talked to the Pastor before the service. Another, dropped off the family and parked the car, only to be told "sorry - you can't sit with your family - the service has already started". Another, was embarrassed by being singled out as visitor - sorry - you are a stranger. Another, endured not once but twice in the worship service "the kiss of peace" - sorry - you have to talk to me whether you want to or not. Then one, was asked by the pastor to take their child out of the church - sorry no crying kids allowed - just snoring adults.

How about a few less "sorry" and a lot more "God Loves You - Welcome."
